The Paulo Nogueira Terapias space opens the doors to Kundalini Yoga!
Kundalini Yoga consists of a set of asanas, kriyas, mudras, pranayama (breathing techniques) and meditation brought to the West by Yogi Bhajan in 1969, primarily for the treatment of addictions (alcohol, tobacco and drugs) and dependencies. Healing obsessive and compulsive behaviors has proven extremely successful with Kundalini Yoga and it has grown in number of practitioners significantly since it began to be more widely known.
However, not only the healing of chemical dependency is addressed but also the healing of addiction to anything that promotes other kinds of restrictions such as addiction to certain love relationships where the practitioner learns to let go, to detach healthily as well as family (parents and children who are too attached). Kundalini Yoga promotes the increase of inner freedom in the individual, reinforcing his self-confidence, his inner security, since in one class all the chakras are worked on, in order to free oneself from everything that represents forms of instant gratification as a mechanism of compensation for some negative situation that the practitioner is going through in his life. These instant gratification mechanisms include sex, alcohol, tobacco, gambling, internet, obsessive and excessive exercise, shopping and food (usually sweets and fast food). This gratification occurs because certain neurotransmitters are released in the brain that activate the brain area corresponding to pleasure. In Kundalini Yoga, certain asanas contribute to the activation of these same centers without the side effects of these quick gratification mechanisms.
The energy of Kundalini Yoga activates the solar plexus, energizing it. When the solar plexus is low in energy, one’s self-esteem is diminished as well as one’s sense of self-worth and personal power. It is at these times that the compulsion for unhealthy habits grows and the search for pleasure becomes an obsession.
